DealDash De-Skunks the Dog
Has your dog Been sprayed by a skunk? DealDash is here to help. Read on for more information.
Now that summer is here you and your pets are probably spending more time outdoors. Unfortunately, when your dogs are exploring outside, especially at night, sometimes there are skunks. Skunks are generally afraid of dogs and will spray them as a warning to go elsewhere. Sadly, skunk spray not only smells terrible but it can also irritate your dog’s eyes, nose, and mouth. It’s very difficult to get the skunk spray smell off of dogs, but there are a few things that you can try. Here are some tips and tricks from DealDash.
Keep Your Dog Outside
If your dog has been sprayed, be sure to keep him outside. You don’t want him to come inside and roll around on your carpet, sofa, blankets, or even his own bed because the skunk spray is actually an oil and will transfer to other surfaces. This oil is difficult to remove from the dog, but also from cloth surfaces as well.
Wear Old Clothing to Bathe the Dog
As I said, the skunk spray is an oil that will transfer from your dog to other surfaces, and this includes you and your clothing as well! When your dog has been sprayed and you need to give him a bath, you’ll want to put on some old clothing first.
Even though you are bathing the dog and he should be clean afterward, you should try to find an old towel that you don’t mind getting ruined. You might not be able to get out the skunk spray entirely, and you definitely don’t want to transfer that to any towel that you or your family might use for bathing later.
Make a Doggie De-Skunking Shampoo
Some people swear by using tomato juice to de-skunk a dog, however, I have used it and it just makes your dog smell like a tomato that for skunked. For a more effective de-skunking, use this recipe:
- 1 Quart hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of Dawn liquid dish soap
This recipe is good for a dog that is 25 pounds or less. Double the recipe for dogs 25-50 pounds, and triple it for dogs over 50 pounds. Be sure not to get this solution in his eyes. If you need to get the solution onto his face, then dip an old toothbrush into the mixture and apply it carefully.
Leave this mixture on for 10 minutes. The Dawn dish detergent will break up the oils in the skunk spray so that you can wash it away. After 10 minutes, rinse your dog with water. If there is still a strong skunk odor, then repeat the process.
After the smell has mostly been removed, then re-bathe your dog with regular dog shampoo. Be sure to use a different clean towel, you don’t want to re-apply any skunk spray back onto the dog!
