DealDash Kids: Help Your Kids Enjoy Reading

As a kid, I loved to read. This love doesn’t come naturally to all kids, though. Here are some pointers from DealDash to help your kids learn how to enjoy reading.

I was an only child when I was a kid, so I had plenty of lonely times that I filled with books. When I was young, I was a very early reader. I never struggled with it, so that is probably why I loved it! However, reading doesn’t come easy to all kids, my oldest being one of them. Here are some tips that I have used with him to help him enjoy reading.

Let Them Read Anything They Want (Within Reason)

When kids are in school they are always told exactly what to read. Now that we are all teaching at home there is more freedom for kids to choose exactly what they want to read. My oldest isn’t fond of typical novels, he likes graphic novels, comic books, and non-fiction books such as World Record books. These aren’t things that they are allowed to read for school book reports, but since the kids currently only have a goal for “minutes read” this isn’t a problem.

Encourage Them to Read to a Pet or Sibling

Another way that you can help your kids enjoy reading is to ask them to read to a pet or a little brother or sister. This works best if the younger sibling doesn’t know how to read yet, so they don’t point out any mistakes – and I’m assuming your pets don’t know how to read, either! Ever since the kids have been out of school my oldest has been reading to my youngest after dinner each night. This helps your reader feel more confident because the younger child will presumably pick a book that is an easier level than the reader uses for school.

Organize the Books in a Nice Way With Help From DealDash

Choosing a book from a messy and cluttered area can be very frustrating. So, another way to help your child enjoy reading is to have your books nicely organized for them to peruse. DealDash Kids: Why is Reading Important?

With all of the fun video games and electronics, reading can sometimes take a backseat for kid’s attention. Here is why reading is important, from DealDash.

When it comes to useful skills to teach your kids, reading should be at the top of the list. Reading opens up a world of benefits for kids, so it is something that should not be forgotten about. The following are some great reasons why reading is so critical for your kids, even though there are lots of other fun things to do. Read on for more information from DealDash.

Enrich Their Imagination

Reading opens up a world of creativity for kids. They can escape into fantastic new worlds and let their imaginations run wild. This will open up their love of reading and maybe even create stories of their own. It helps them learn there is a vast world out there to explore and reading books and other materials can be a great way to explore it.

Enhance Social SKills

Reading can enhance kids social skills so they should be read to as soon as possible by a parent or older sibling. They will enjoy having stories read to them or reading to others when they are able. Sharing stories is a great way to socialize with other people so it is a skill you should help your kids learn. The more they read, the more stories they will have to share with family and friends.

Reading is FUN!

Reading is good fun, and you don’t have to worry about them reading something they shouldn’t. This is because most all books for kids are labeled for specific age groups. So you can feel confident in knowing your child is having some age-appropriate fun reading a good book.

Language Skills

Reading is also essential as it helps kids develop language skills. Your kids will learn new words by reading which will encourage them to read more and improve their language skills even further.

Thanks for Reading

So as you can see, there are many reasons as to why reading is essential for kids. They should be read to at an early age to help encourage a love of reading so they can enjoy the many benefits.

Also, if you need any books you can get them online at a Barnes and Noble. DealDash has gift cards to Barnes and Noble which is an excellent place to get books for your kids or yourself.

DealDash Helps: Encourage Your Child’s Reading

DealDash reading

A love of reading is a very important skill to foster in a child. How does a child learn to read? The love for stories – the best start.

Your child might start learning how to read way before he learns the letters. The learning of reading begins with the love of stories. This means that your child is going to love the stories you read before he learns how to read them himself. This kind of love and passion for reading is created early in his lifetime.

Start Their Love of Reading Young

It is important to read to our kids way before they begin to listen to us actively. This means reading to them from their infant stage, even though they have no idea what we are saying. Reading something (anything!) to them can develop their attention, creativity, language. As a bonus, the voice of the person that is reading will become a relaxing and a comforting sound.

The child who comes to love stories and books already has a huge advantage, because, from his love, a strong understanding of learning and reading will be born. This understanding of books and reading will put them head and shoulders above their classmates who don’t have the same love of reading.

Why Do Kids Want the Same Story Nightly?

As the babies grow, the routine of your nightly book session changes. You will be interrupted every five seconds by many questions, and your child will develop an obsession with a specific story. This story will be read by you every night before bed, several nights in a row. Yes, it might become annoying and exasperating for an adult, but you have to do it.

Kids like the feeling of power and anticipation they have when they know what is going to come next in the story. While they try to memorize the story, word for word, your child develops his cognitive skills. He will also love the feeling that the world he is living in is the same day-after-day and he knows what to expect. So remember: Don’t skip any pages!

Repetition is Good for Them

Psychologists discovered that those children who ask for the same story, again and again, learn more words and have a better vocabulary than those who want a new story every time. It’s simple to understand why – these stories have new, unknown words, which are assimilated by children and they learn how to use them proficiently. They will be able to give the definition of the word after so many repetitions of the story. This is why repetition is so important to a child’s growing brain.

Yes, new stories are fun and entertaining but keep in mind that if you are going to repeat a story for several nights to your child, he will most likely learn new words that he didn’t know before. Be patient and make your child happy by respecting his wishes for the same story night after night.
