DealDash Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a problem that many Americans cope with on a daily basis. Here are some tips and tricks from DealDash to keep your blood pressure in check.

High blood pressure is also called hypertension. Hypertension is a serious risk factor for strokes, kidney disease, and heart attacks and disease. Be sure to visit your doctor yearly and have your blood pressure checked regularly. A blood pressure of 140/90 or 150/90 in those who are 60 years of age and older is considered high. You can avoid high blood pressure by exercising, eating a healthy diet, and managing stress.

Watch Your Diet

Avoiding hypertension is important, especially as you get older. Eating a heart-healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables is very important to help you avoid high blood pressure. Certain nutrients have been found to help prevent high blood pressure: potassium, calcium, magnesium, and omega-3s. You can easily get all of these nutrients that you need by eating a diet that’s full of heart-healthy foods such as almonds, leafy greens, squash, yogurt, and beans.

Cut Out the Salt

Americans eat far too much salt in their diet. Consuming so much salt can lead to high blood pressure. Dietary guidelines state that everyone over the age of 2 should consume less than 2,300 mg of salt daily. Many Americans consume double that, daily.

Get Your Exercise

Another way to help keep your blood pressure down is to perform regular exercise. Exercising a few times per week (ideally daily) lowers your risk of high blood pressure by 20% to 50%. Doctors recommend 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day, or a total of 150 minutes per week. Speaking of exercise, it’s a very important part of maintaining a healthy weight.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being a healthy weight for your height is also an important part of keeping your blood pressure down.  Experts claim that a large waist circumference can be a predictor of high blood pressure and heart disease. Studies show that waist measurements of 40 inches or more for men, 35 inches or more for women are linked to high blood pressure. However, if you take the above-mentioned guidelines regarding healthy food and exercising and follow them, then you shouldn’t have too much trouble maintaining a healthy weight.

Try to Avoid Excess Stress

Let’s face it, there’s no way to completely avoid all stress. With jobs, families, and everything else that you have on your plate, it’s normal to be stressed out sometimes. However, there are many ways that you can reduce eliminate some of those stresses. Try yoga, meditation, or napping.
