DealDash Helps: Stop Your Dog From Begging
It might have been cute when your dog was a tiny puppy, but begging isn’t so cute when he’s 60 pounds! Here are some tips and ideas from DealDash.
A dog begging at the table is commonly thought of as rather rude, and it’s a common complaint among dog owners. Many dog owners find it difficult to stop their dog from begging at the table, it can be a difficult habit to break. If you can find the time and dedication to work with your dog on this issue you can be well on your way to a more calm and enjoyable dinner, sans begging dog.
Just Ignore the Dog
Just ignoring your dog can be easier said than done, but if you are able to ignore his begging when you are eating then eventually he will figure out that there is no pay-off to begging at the table. However, if you give in sporadically, then you’re setting him back every single time. If he realizes that you will give in every 10 times that he begs, then he will just keep begging over and over again. It might sound a little bit mean to ignore him, but it’s really for his own benefit. Be sure to give him plenty of love and cuddles and maybe even a treat if you can get through a meal without him begging at the table.
Stop the People Food Altogether
If you’re a pet lover, then you probably think that you’re doing a nice thing for your dog when you give him people food. However, in most cases, this simply isn’t correct. Unless you’re giving him pure meat and vegetables, then the people food that you’re feeding him probably isn’t really healthy for him, anyway. If you can stop the people food altogether, including not giving him any in his bowl, then he will be healthier for it. In addition to being healthier, if you aren’t giving him any more people food, then you can’t give in to his begging at the table – unless you’re eating dog food, that is!
Make Sure the Family is On Board
It’s very important that your whole family is on board with the objective of not feeding the dog from the table anymore. No one really enjoys it when the dog begs at the table, so this should be an easy thing to agree on. However, if you have any small kids in your family, you will need to be sure that they understand what’s going on. Kids love to feed the dog from their plate, especially if there are things on there that they don’t want to eat! If your kids are younger than 5 or so, then you’ll probably need to keep a close eye on them to make sure that they aren’t either sneaking the dog treats or even accidentally feeding him by dropping things inadvertently.
