First, try to establish a regular sleep schedule. This may be difficult if you don’t have a typical nine-to-five job, but it’s important to do what you can to stick to a regular sleep pattern. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have a
typical 10-11 pm to 6-7 am schedule, it just means that you should try to sleep and wake at the same times each day. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. This will help your body get into a rhythm and make it easier to fall asleep at night.
Night Owl Tips – Get Some Sunlight
Next, another tip for getting better sleep is to get some sunlight during the day. This can be difficult during the winter months, but try to get outside for at least a few minutes each day. The sunlight will help to regulate your body’s natural sleep cycle. Even if you work a 3rd shift job, just be sure to get up and outside while the sun is still out. Even if it’s at 3 pm, get outside for 10 minutes while the sun is still shining, to get some of those wonderful Vitamin D benefits.
Night Owl Tips – Avoid Caffeine 6 Hours Before Bed
Finally, avoid caffeine within 6 hours before you need to go to sleep, no matter what time your bedtime is. Many people rely on caffeine to help them stay awake, but this can actually make it harder to fall asleep when you go to bed. This is true no matter if your typical bedtime is 10 pm or 5 am.
If you need a pick-me-up within 6 hours of bedtime, try drinking herbal tea or decaf coffee instead. Both of these drinks still have a small amount of caffeine, but not enough to affect your sleep too much.
