It might be August, but there are still plenty of days of summer left for fun and adventures. Let’s make a bucket list and check things off this month!
Isn’t it wild how fast summer flies? One minute the kids are tossing their backpacks aside, and the next we’re scrambling to soak up those last golden days before school routines return. That’s why I love creating a family bucket list for August. It’s just a fun way to squeeze in some final memory-making before the calendar flips to fall. Here are 10 end-of-summer activities from DealDash that are simple, low-stress, and perfect for families with no elaborate planning required.
1. Backyard Movie Night
String up some fairy lights, lay out blankets, and cue the popcorn! Bonus points if you let the kids pick the movie – and yes, snacks count as dinner. If you have older kids, I suggest JAWS! This summer is the 50 year anniversary of the greatest shark movie ever made.
2. Try a New Ice Cream Spot
Make it an adventure by trying a flavor you wouldn’t normally choose. Pistachio, lavender, or bubblegum anyone? Check your local Nextdoor app and ask for suggestions from your neighbors.
3. Family Water Balloon Battle
Whether it’s a full-on showdown or just silly splashing in the yard, this one always ends in giggles. (Tip: Fill them ahead of time and store in a cooler!) My kids love the Bunch O Balloons brand, but I’ve been wanting to try the reusable type.
4. Visit a Local Park You’ve Never Explored
Pack a picnic and head somewhere new. Even a neighboring town’s park can feel like a mini getaway.
5. Watch the Sunset Together
No screens, no schedule, just a quiet moment to reflect on summer. Bonus if you bring slushies or popsicles! Alternately, watch the sunrise if you have kids that are early risers.
6. Have a “Yes Day”
Within reason, of course. Let the kids choose meals, activities, and even outfits for the day. It’s always hilarious and unforgettable. Just be sure to put a few ground rules in place such as “Nothing more than 50 miles away or more than $50 per person per activity”.
7. DIY Tie-Dye Shirts
Grab a kit, some white tees, and head outside. It’s messy, colorful fun and gives the kids something to wear on their first day back!
8. Make a Time Capsule
Let everyone contribute one small item or note. Hide it away until next summer and see how much changes! If this activity is a hit with your family, continue doing it each year, including everything from the previous years in the new time capsule.
9. Sleep Under the Stars
Whether it’s a tent or just blankets on the deck, a night under the open sky is always magical. If your family is the opposite of outdoorsy, then have a sleepover in the living room instead.
10. Create a Summer Scrapbook
Print photos, add ticket stubs, drawings, and funny quotes from the season. It’s a great rainy day project and a keepsake to treasure.
