DealDash Kids: Encouraging a Love for Reading

DealDash

My kids love reading, and I hope yours do, too. If not, here are some helpful suggestions from DealDash to encourage their love for reading.

In today’s age, it’s easy for kids to be too involved with their TV and their video games. It’s important to try to build your child’s interest in reading. It can help with learning, problem-solving, and building imagination and creativity. Read these helpful suggestions from DealDash to get you started.

Read to Them Daily at a Young Age

First, the best way to instill reading in young children is to start reading them stories at a young age. While young children have a lot of energy, reading a story before bed is a perfect transition to get ready for sleep. When you prepare to read a story, let your children have some say. Ask them if they want a specific story or if they want “a surprise”. Calling the story that you pick a surprise will add to the allure. I don’t know about your kids, but mine typically go for the surprise!

Let Bigger Kids Choose the Books at the Store

Next, letting your children pick the stories that they read is important at all times. In other words, as your child gets older, let them choose books at the store. You’ll find that this can build their interest as they’ll develop a preference for a style or a character. Of course, they might enjoy a few suggestions from mom or dad. My daughter loves to hear about the books I read when I was her age.

Encourage Creativity

Also, something else that I’ve found to be key is encouraging your child. At some point, there will be some benefit to correcting as a child in is reading, but at the earliest stages, let them create their story. My nieces used to love telling a story based on the pictures that they saw over time, they would start to memorize the story that I was reading and then retell it from memory.

I love bringing art into the picture as a way to help encourage reading. I frequently draw a picture and ask my children to write a quick story, or have them do the same for me. It’s something that works for kids who are getting older but offers a connection. The key here is to be sure that what you’re doing doesn’t feel like work. If your child gets bogged down, you can have them tell you a story and then draw the picture and write it out.

DealDash Can Help Organize Kid’s Books

Finally, you can encourage your kids to expand their palette and read new things by keeping the books neat and organized. When you keep them in a pile or a stack on a random shelf they tend to pick whichever one is on the top. By organizing them nicely on their very own bookcase your kids will take pride in their book collection. To find kid’s bookshelves on DealDash, just click here. Thanks for Reading

An important note is that a key part of reading that is often forgotten is having an imagination. Always encourage your child’s imagination. It’s like a muscle that needs exercise. Without imagination, a child can’t see the “picture” that comes from the words. Those pictures are what makes a story interesting. Thanks for reading the newest blog!

DealDash Guide to Organizing Your Bookshelf

DealDash

Books can make a house look comfortable and welcoming. Here are some ideas from DealDash for organizing the books on your bookshelf.

Many people are starting to read their books online, but I don’t think that paperback and hardcover books will be going away anytime soon. I know a number of people who still love the feel of a book in their hands. They say there’s something special about turn the page rather than just swiping it. So, we’ve decided to take a few minutes to look at how you can keep those books organized. Read on for some organizational ideas from DealDash.

Cleaning and Dusting

First, you should start by cleaning everything out. It doesn’t take long for books (and spaces between them) to collect dust. Anytime I plan to re-organize, I take everything off and wipe my bookcases down. Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned you should consider how you want your books organized.

Get a Bookcase From DealDash

In the course of cleaning and dusting, you might find that your bookcase is old and/or has some damage. Since your books are already off of the shelf, it’s a great time to get a new bookshelf. DealDash has bookcases, shelves, and racks that your books would love to live on. Choose from wood, wire, and other materials. You can choose from traditional or modern styles. Just click here and you will find some beautiful bookcases from DealDash.

Organize Alphabetically

A number of people like to go alphabetically. Much like the library, having a perfect system makes it easy to find what you’re looking for. You could do this by the last name of the author or by the title. I prefer using titles as I don’t always remember who the author was when I’m looking for something.

Organize By Topic

Others look to organize by topic. They find that knowing what style they want to read is more important than finding a specific book. My favorite books are typically the same genre, so this doesn’t really work for me. If you have a large library, it can be a great way of encouraging yourself to pick up a book you haven’t seen in a few years.

Organize Visually

You may also decide to focus on aesthetics and not organize your books in any particular way. This option works really well if your bookcase is used for its visual as much as its practical uses. If you have a small library at home, this may be the way to go. I love to randomize the books so that the height varies from left to right. This adds a bit of texture to the bookcase.

DealDash Helps: Encourage Your Child’s Reading

DealDash reading

A love of reading is a very important skill to foster in a child. How does a child learn to read? The love for stories – the best start.

Your child might start learning how to read way before he learns the letters. The learning of reading begins with the love of stories. This means that your child is going to love the stories you read before he learns how to read them himself. This kind of love and passion for reading is created early in his lifetime.

Start Their Love of Reading Young

It is important to read to our kids way before they begin to listen to us actively. This means reading to them from their infant stage, even though they have no idea what we are saying. Reading something (anything!) to them can develop their attention, creativity, language. As a bonus, the voice of the person that is reading will become a relaxing and a comforting sound.

The child who comes to love stories and books already has a huge advantage, because, from his love, a strong understanding of learning and reading will be born. This understanding of books and reading will put them head and shoulders above their classmates who don’t have the same love of reading.

Why Do Kids Want the Same Story Nightly?

As the babies grow, the routine of your nightly book session changes. You will be interrupted every five seconds by many questions, and your child will develop an obsession with a specific story. This story will be read by you every night before bed, several nights in a row. Yes, it might become annoying and exasperating for an adult, but you have to do it.

Kids like the feeling of power and anticipation they have when they know what is going to come next in the story. While they try to memorize the story, word for word, your child develops his cognitive skills. He will also love the feeling that the world he is living in is the same day-after-day and he knows what to expect. So remember: Don’t skip any pages!

Repetition is Good for Them

Psychologists discovered that those children who ask for the same story, again and again, learn more words and have a better vocabulary than those who want a new story every time. It’s simple to understand why – these stories have new, unknown words, which are assimilated by children and they learn how to use them proficiently. They will be able to give the definition of the word after so many repetitions of the story. This is why repetition is so important to a child’s growing brain.

Yes, new stories are fun and entertaining but keep in mind that if you are going to repeat a story for several nights to your child, he will most likely learn new words that he didn’t know before. Be patient and make your child happy by respecting his wishes for the same story night after night.
