Let’s face it, achieving your goals can be hard. That’s why they are called “goals” and not “stuff you do every day”. You may have a personal goal such as running a 5K or getting a promotion, or you may have a team goal such as winning a trophy. Most goals are achievable through hard work and practice. Here are some tips from DealDash to keep you striving for your goals.

What is Your Goal

Before you can work on achieving your goal, you need to know exactly what it is. Really think about it, and jot down some notes. For example, I mentioned above that your goal might be to run a 5K. Is your goal to enter a race and complete the 5K, or is your goal to just become a better runner? Write down your thoughts on your goal, and come up with a solid answer.

Once you have come up with a solid goal, then it’s time to work on a plan to achieve it. Please note, that some goals are simply not possible, but you can put forth your best effort and improve yourself along the way.

Break it Up

After you’ve come up with your goal it’s time to come up with some steps to achieve your goal. You typically can’t go from zero to goal, you have to complete some steps along the way. Using the 5K example, you can’t go from never running to entering a 5K. You would have to start slowly, first by walking the distance, then by walking and running, then running the distance. This goal would typically take a few months to achieve if you worked very hard. Even if you didn’t ultimately achieve your goal you would still be improving your health with every step. So figure out the steps that are needed with your particular goal, and get to work.

Think Positively

From the moment you have decided what your goal is to the day of completion, it’s important to think positively. Thinking positively can put you in a better frame of mind and encourage yourself to complete your goal. Even when the going gets tough, it’s important to keep a good attitude and think positively.

DealDash Helps: Monthly Goals

It’s always a good practice to have monthly goals for yourself. Here are some ways to integrate your goals into your lifestyle.

Do you have a difficult time making goals for yourself and working to achieve them? Maybe the problem is that you are “biting off more than you can chew” and need to break up your big goal into “bite sized” mini goals. I know that if I make a large goal for myself such as “lose 20 pounds” I quickly get discouraged and completely abandon the project. If you think that making mini goals for yourself to achieve a bigger goal might work for you, then read on.

What goal would you like to accomplish for November? Since November is the month of over-eating, I think that a reasonable goal would be:

  • Don’t gain any weight.

This goal might sound simple, but with Thanksgiving coming up shortly, along with leftover Halloween candy lurking around, and Christmas cookies on the horizon I think that it’s reasonable. Here is how I would like to break this goal down into mini goals:

  1. Throw out the remaining Halloween candy. It’s getting stale anyway.
  2. Cook using a butter substitute, even though it doesn’t taste as delicious.
  3. Only get one serving of food on Thanksgiving, and skip the ice cream and whipped cream on my one slice of pie.
  4. Exercise for 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week.
  5. Track my calories for the rest of the month.

With my bigger goal broken down into mini goals I feel that I will have much more success with my goal for November.

What are your goals? Here are a few guidelines to help you achieve your goals:

  • Be accountable. Make sure that you tell a friend or family member your goal for the month so that you can keep yourself honest.
  • Be specific. Vague goals are too easy to ignore and forget.
  • Think realistically. Don’t over-reach. If you’re a couch potato who loves desserts then losing 20 pounds in a month is not realistic (or healthy).
  • Do check-ins. Do an honest check-in with yourself every few days. Are your mini-goals helping you reach your bigger goal? If not, change things up!

I am personally working on meeting my personal goals more consistently, and I learned something recently that I would like to share with all of you.

Maybe I am just behind the curve, but I learned about something recently that has quite literally changed my life, and I thought that I would share it with you. If you are having trouble meeting your own goals, whether they are personal, professional, or somewhere in-between the S.M.A.R.T. system can help you.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-bound. Let’s go through the acronym and see what each part means.

S – Specific. You need to think about what your specific goal entails, and how you can go about accomplishing it. No matter if your goal is a personal one such as losing 20 pounds or a professional goal such as getting your sales up by 10%, be specific.

M – Measurable. You goal needs to be measurable, as in, not just “lose weight” or “increase sales.” How will you even realize if you are making progress towards your goal unless you have a specific and measurable goal?

A – Action-oriented. Even if you have thought of a well-defined goal it could prove difficult to achieve without a clear plan of action for you to follow. When you are thinking about your goal and making your plan, be sure that you include action-oriented steps as part of your goal achievement plan. That way you’ll know what you’re trying to accomplish and, more importantly, how you’ll get there.

R – Realistic. There are few things more discouraging than not being able to meet a goal. However, if you are setting the bar too high for yourself then you are setting yourself up for fail. For example, saying that your goal is to lose 50 pounds in 1 month isn’t realistic. If you set your goal to something more realistic such as 2 pounds per week you have a much greater chance of success.

T – Time-bound. Be sure that there is a firm time-limit to accomplish your goal. If you’re having trouble deciding how long to give yourself to accomplish your goal pick an end date. After you have set a firm deadline for yourself, work your way backwards to determine when you need to begin working towards your goal, and when milestones along the way must be met.
