DealDash August Declutter Challenge: 15 Minutes a Day

Can you believe that it’s August already?! We need to make the most of the summer that we have left – but we also need to keep the house from falling apart. Let’s Declutter!

As August rolls in, I always get that itch to clear out the summer chaos and start fresh before the kids head back to school. But let’s be real. Between end-of-season playdates, last-minute trips, and back-to-school shopping, a full-on home overhaul just isn’t happening. That’s why I love this August Declutter Challenge from DealDash, it takes just 15 minutes a day to get things tidy and calm before fall kicks into gear.

Why the 15 Minute Declutter Works

Fifteen minutes might not sound like much, but it’s just enough to tackle a drawer, a corner of the closet, or even that dreaded catch-all area on the kitchen counter (you know the one!). It’s short enough to squeeze in between errands or while waiting on dinner, and long enough to see real progress.

Pro tip: Set a timer, turn on a fun playlist or podcast, and challenge your kids to a mini clean-up race. It turns decluttering into a quick family game!

Week-by-Week Declutter Plan

Here’s a simple plan to follow through the month. Feel free to shuffle days based on your home’s hot spots:

Week 1: Entry & Kitchen

  • Day 1: Clear out shoes and bags at the door
  • Day 2: Tidy the kitchen junk drawer
  • Day 3: Wipe down fridge shelves and toss expired items
  • Day 4: Declutter the pantry snacks
  • Day 5: Purge old water bottles and travel mugs
  • Day 6: Clear one kitchen cabinet
  • Day 7: Rest or revisit anything you missed

Week 2: Living Spaces

  • Toys, books, DVDs, and mystery cords: this is the week to tackle your shared spaces! Depending on your home setup, this can include the living room, dining room, family room, play room, office, and more.

Week 3: Bedrooms

  • Focus on clothes that no longer fit, under-bed chaos, and outgrown stuffies, Make piles for “Keep”, “Donate”, and “Trash”, more on that down below.

Week 4: Bathrooms & Extras

  • Focus on makeup, towels, expired meds, and that linen closet you’re afraid to open! This is also the spot to include any extra closets that you might have in the home, from coat closets to hallway closets.

Keep, Toss, or Donate?

Keep a laundry basket or reusable bag nearby for donate-able items. If it’s broken, expired, or hasn’t been used in a year it’s probably safe to say goodbye. I keep a “maybe” box in the garage for anything I’m not quite ready to part with, and if I don’t touch it in a month, out it goes!

DealDash Can Help You Declutter

It might sound counterintuative, but sometimes you have to bring in a few new things to begin the declutter. For example, a new floating shelf, set of bookshelves, or bins and a rack to put them on can be very helpful in the decluttering process. Additionally, once you have done a full home declutter, you might consider bringing in some new home accessories or decorations. For example, a fresh living room rug, a set of wall sconces, or hanging light pendant. You can find all of these things and many, many more on DealDash.
