DealDash DIY Water Toys & Games You Can Make

It’s been in the 100’s all week, and my kids are getting bored with the same old Super Soakers. Let’s make some DIY water toys today!

When the summer sun starts blazing and the kids are bouncing off the walls, it’s time to head outside and cool down with some water fun. So, instead of running to the store for toys, we love getting creative and making our own water games right in the backyard. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it also gives the kids a chance to get hands-on and involved in the prep. Also, some of our best memories have come from these splashy, homemade adventures. Read on for some excellent DIY water toy suggestions from DealDash.

DIY Water Toys #1 – Sponge Ball

First up, one of our family favorites is a DIY sponge ball toss. We take ordinary kitchen sponges, cut them into strips, and tie them together in the center with a rubber band to create soft, squishy balls. Once soaked in water, these little sponge balls are perfect for tossing, catching, and even playing tag. They’re reusable and safe for younger kids, which makes them a great choice for group play. Also, if you don’t want to use up your expensive Scrub Daddy kitchen sponges, the dollar store usually has packs of cheap sponges for sale.

DIY Water Toys #2 – Water Balloon Pinata

Next up, another hit at our house is the water balloon pinata. First we fill balloons with water, then tie them onto a string, and hang them from a tree branch. Then, one at a time, the kids take turns blindfolded, trying to pop them with a plastic bat or a long stick. There’s always lots of giggling and cheering, and everyone gets soaked, which is exactly the point. It’s like a mini celebration in the yard.

DIY Water Toys #3 – Backyard Car Wash

For a longer-lasting activity, we’ve created our own backyard car wash setup. We line up pool noodles to form a “tunnel,” hang strips of fabric or sponges from a clothesline, and let the kids ride their bikes or scooters through while we spray them with the hose. They love pretending it’s a real car wash, and I love how it keeps them active and laughing.
