Most people in the world have eaten peanut butter, but are completely unaware that there are many other types of nut butters.

If you’re sensitive to peanuts, you might want to try a different type of nut butter, under a doctor’s recommendation of course. You can try almond, cashew, macadamia, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio, or walnut. All of these nut butters have a few things in common such as a high fat and protein content.

The doctor might advise you not to try any of these nut butters if you are extremely sensitive to peanuts. But don’t despair! There are also “nut butters” that are made out of seeds instead, such as pumpkin seed butter, sesame seed butter, soynut butter, or sunflower seed butter. These nut butters are just as creamy and delicious as the original.

Making a nut butter is so simple that you don’t even need a recipe! Just take a food processor, toss your nut of choice in, and blend, blend, blend. You might have to blend for several minutes, and add a small amount of oil such as peanut, avocado, or grapeseed to speed the process along.

When you first begin blending the nuts in the food processor they will first be crumbly, then start to resemble a very rough-textured peanut butter, and if you keep blending it will eventually turn smooth and creamy. Please note, though, it will most likely not be quite as smooth as the commercial nut butters that you might buy at the supermarket or the health food store. After you have made your nut butter and put it in a container, try storing it upside down. All natural butters end up separating after a while. They are completely safe to eat after they have separated, it’s just easier to scoop and spread the nut butters if they are stored upside down.

If you’re wondering what to do with your nut butter once you have it, the answer is – many things! Other than making a NB&J sandwich, you can also use your nut butter as a dip for bananas or apples, you can put nut butter in your pancake batter, make sauces and dressings with them, and so much more. Anything that you do with peanut butter can be done with other nut butters.
