DealDash Recipes: Crockpot Kalua Pork

DealDash kalua pork

Kalua pork is a delicious and very easy to make dish. A few minutes of prep will reward you.

As you might guess kalua pork originated in Hawaii. The original dish was actually cooked in a hole in the ground – and in some Hawaiian families, it still is! However, with people’s busy lives these days cooking in the crockpot or slow cooker makes life easy. Luckily, this is a dish that just takes a few minutes and a few dollars worth of supplies and you’ll be left with a delightful, tasty dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 (ish) pounds of pork shoulder/pork butt/Boston butt meat
  • 1 Tablespoon Liquid Smoke (Hickory flavor)
  • 2 Tablespoons Hawaiian Sea Salt (red) – However if you can’t find this, you can use coarse sea salt instead.

Directions:

  1. Wash pork and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Take a long-tined fork and poke your pork all over – flip it around in the crock pot to minimize pork juice splatter.
  3. Slowly pour the liquid smoke all over the pork while it’s in the slow cooker
  4. Sprinkle the salt on the pork, rubbing it in. Flip it around while you are rubbing the salt in so you get all of the sides salted.
  5. Cook in the crockpot on low for 8+ hours. You can cook this pork in the slow cooker for up to 12 hours.
  6. Shred with forks and spoon the juices over the shredded pork.
  7. Serve over rice, veggies, or a combination of the two.

DealDash Has Kitchen Essentials

Do you have a slow cooker or crock pot at home? It’s definitely a kitchen essential. I use mine every single week, sometimes twice a week. The slow cooker is the perfect way to make a home-cooked dinner for your family, even if you’re too busy to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Another excellent solution to the problem is a pressure cooker. You can make this exact same recipe in a pressure cooker. If you prefer to cook this recipe in a pressure cooker, you will need to leave it in there for an hour. Honestly, though, it tastes a lot better when you cook it on low in the slow cooker. However, if you’re short on time, then the pressure cooker is the way to go!
