DealDash Talks about Sun Safety
Skin cancer might not be a fun subject to talk about, but since we are in the thick of summer it’s an important thing to think about.
By this time everyone know that going outside in the hot summer sun without any kind of SPF sunscreen or protective clothing such as a hat or sunglasses is not a good idea. Sometimes we need a little reminder, though, so here is yours:
Be sure to wear your sunscreen this summer.
Sometimes even if you are extremely diligent in protecting yourself against the sun’s harmful rays they can sneak past you anyway. Skin cancer is no joke, and early detection is important and can be life-saving. Early detection of skin cancer isn’t difficult if you are diligent in examining your body for the telltale signs of skin cancer beginning to form. Luckily, if you detect skin cancer early you can prevent it from spreading and will be able to get it removed, usually with minimal lasting problems. Since early detection is so crucial to diagnosing skin cancer, you should make checking your body for moles and other suspicious spots a habit.
The safest way to check yourself for skin cancer is to examine yourself on a monthly basis in the summer months and on a bi-monthly basis in the winter months. You should examine yourself monthly year-round if you live in a hot sunny climate where you are outdoors frequently all year-long.
When performing your skin examination choose a specific time each month to do your exams – you can choose a specific day, but I personally find that it fits better with my schedule to pick a weekend (the first weekend of every month) and check everyone for skin abnormalities. When doing your examination you should evaluate each area of your skin, leaving no part unseen. It is very helpful to have a skin examination sheet that you can print off and use each month. I am including one below that is free from the American Academy of Dermatology. There are others online for free if you would like a different style.
