Strawberries are not only delicious, but they are also very fun and easy to grow as well. There are different types of strawberries, so be sure to choose the type that is best suited for your garden environment. Even if you don’t have a garden you can still grow strawberries in containers, which is another positive for trying to grow strawberries! Choose Your Plant

There are two main types of strawberries – summer producing and year-round producing. There are many different varieties within those two types. The first thing that you will want to do is decide if you want the summer producing or year-round producing type of strawberry plant. Personally, I don’t care to bring the plants inside the house in the winter, so I get the summer producing type every year. However, the choice is up to you.

Where Can I Get My Plant?

You can get your strawberry plants at a variety of places. They are sold at farmer’s markets, hardware stores, plant centers, and sometimes even at your local supermarket.

Choose a Healthy One!

When you choose your plant be sure to choose one that is healthy. If you accidentally grab an unhealthy one you are already working against yourself. Do not purchase the plant if it has spots on the leaves, brown edges, or wilted ends. You might be able to nurse it back to health, but it’s unlikely that it will produce as much fruit as a fully healthy plant.

Indoors or Out?

Next, decide where you’re going to put these strawberry plants. If you’re choosing the year-round type I would suggest that you put them in a large pot or another container that you are able to move indoors when the weather gets colder. If you choose the type of plant that produces only in the summer, then you can choose if you’d rather plant them in a container, a raised garden, or even just straight into the ground. The choice is yours, depending on the amount of space that you would like to devote to the strawberries.

It’s Harvest Time

The strawberries are ready when the fruit is red all around. If it’s still got some green on it, then leave it for the next time. If you only pick the ones that are completely red, then you’ll get nice, sweet fruit instead of sour ones. When you are harvesting, be sure that you pick some of the stem as well as the fruit, you want the tops of the strawberries to still have the leaves on – if you pick these off then the tops of your strawberries will dry out much faster.
