DealDash’s Thanksgiving Desserts That Aren’t Pies

Thanksgiving is coming, it’s pie time! However, not everyone likes pie. Here are a few suggestions from DealDash for the non-pie lovers out there.

When you think of Thanksgiving dessert, you think of a slice of pie with whip cream or a side of ice cream. It’s been the standard for decades. We’d like to offer the chance to mix things up a bit this year. Whether you’re a master in the kitchen or someone who likes to keep it simple, we’ve got the solution for you. Read on for some ideas from DealDash.

Skip the Pie, Keep the Pumpkin

Some people are really attached to their traditions, so we’ll start with a few options that are close to the original. A quick search will find great recipes for pumpkin pie brownies that will almost melt in your mouth. For what it’s worth, I’d eat a good pumpkin roll every day of the year if given the option. Adding the chocolate flavor to your traditional pumpkin can really set it apart. If you’re more of an apple person, you could try apple dumplings.

Everyone Likes Cake

For those who are a bit more adventurous, you may want to look at Nutella Butter Cake recipes. This cake looks more like a brownie when you cut it up. And it may be one of the richest desserts you’ll ever taste. You could opt for something that will impress the crowd. Churros are much easier to make than people realize. Because you’re making something “different” you’ll impress a lot of people.

Cookies for Everyone

If you’re looking to keep it simple this year, you can opt for the classics. Cookies are always a safe option. Whether you prefer a classic chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin, you can’t go wrong. Just be sure that you know if anyone has allergies. I’m also a big fan of cheesecake. It’s something that you could make on your own, but it’s easy to find a good variety pack in the store. It’s always nice when you can buy one thing and get multiple flavors.

DealDash Recipe: Carrot Cake Pops, Yum!

I love carrot cake, do you? Sometimes making a whole cake is just too much, though, why not make carrot cake pops with DealDash?

Cake pops became very popular a few years ago when people realized that they could still eat cake even though they were watching their calories. A person would typically only eat 2-3 cake pops per sitting, which is approximately half of a regular serving of cake. Cake pops can be satisfying even though they are smaller than a regular serving of cake. Not only that, they are the perfect size for children, and kids love them because they are so small and cute.

Carrot Cake

Carrot cake is one of those things you either love it or hate it – there are few opinions in the middle! One of the great things about carrot cake is you can customize it to your tastes. Some people like it with nuts, raisins, cranberries, or frosting. You can make your carrot cake with all, some, or none of those extra ingredients and it will still taste great. When you put the cuteness of cake pops with the delicious flavor of carrot cake amazing things happen. Here are directions on how to make carrot cake pops, from DealDash.

Making the Cake

The first thing that you need to do is bake the loaf of carrot cake. You don’t need any frosting at this point in time.

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • cup vegetable oil
  • eggs
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • cups shredded carrots

  1. Heat oven to 350°F
  2. Grease bottom and sides of a 13×9-inch pan
  3. In a large bowl, beat granulated sugar, oil, and eggs with electric mixer on low speed about 30 seconds or so.
  4. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and salt
  5. Beat on low speed 1 minute. Stir in carrots.
  6. Pour into pan
  7. Bake for 40 minutes
  8. Assemble these additional ingredients for the next step:
  •  ½ cup cream cheese icing
  • 1 bag (14 ounces) white or orange chocolate melts
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts, toasted (these are optional)

Turn the Cake Into Cake Pops

  1. Before the cake has cooled down, slice it into slices with a damp knife
  2. When the cake pieces have cooled enough to handle, use your hands to crumble the cake in a large mixing bowl. Be sure to crumble thoroughly, we don’t want big chunks.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of icing into the bowl of cake crumbles. Use a wooden spoon to completely incorporate the carrot cake crumbs and cream cheese icing together until you achieve a consistency of dough. You may add more of the icing if you need it. You’re going for the consistency of playdough.
  4. Stick your bowl of dough mixture in the fridge to cool off for an hour or more.
  5. Take a Tablespoon and scoop out the dough into little piles onto waxed paper.
  6. Roll your dough piles into spheres.
  7. Stick them back in the fridge to chill for at least an hour.
  8. Melt your chocolate and dip each sphere with a toothpick.
  9. Now you can add the chopped nuts if you like, or sprinkles, etc.
  10. Stick them back into the fridge to chill.
  11. Insert sticks if you want them to be actual “pops”.
  12. Enjoy!

Birthdays Are More Fun With DealDash

Do you have a friend, child, or other loved one that is having a birthday soon? Here are a few tips to make their day great!

A birthday is that one special time per year where you are the star! Make your family and friends feel extra special on their birthday with these simple and fun ideas. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to make someone’s birthday extra special.

Everyone likes cake on their birthday, but how about making your loved one a different (or extra!) treat this year? Just because we have a regular birthday cake doesn’t mean that we can also have the birthday person’s favorite dessert as well. This year on her birthday my daughter wanted brownies. So instead of getting a big cake like we usually do, we got a small cake, and baked brownies together as well. Instead of having a big slice of cake we had little slices of cake and little brownie squares. Some other delicious birthday treat ideas include cookies, cheesecake, and apple pie.

Just because your family member is over 12 years old doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve a party hat. Make them a hat out of paper, or buy them a silly hat at the dollar store. You’re allowed to be as silly as you like on your birthday, whether you’re 8 or 88! Other fun hat ideas include princess/prince crown, cowboy hat, or big sombrero.

Don’t forget the card! Now that just about every one of every age has email, I have noticed that receiving paper cards are getting more and more scarce by the year. I don’t know about you, but personally I save paper cards. It’s nice to look back a few years from now and see all of the well-wishes and cute cards that people picked out. You can get a card at the store, make a card with paper and markers, or if you are still stuck on the computer, how about making a card and printing it out? A paper card in the hand just feels so much more special than an email does.

Last but not least, why don’t you get them a little present? You can find some great gift ideas and fun presents on DealDash. DealDash has items for people of all ages and stages of life. Just click right here and you can go browse on DealDash. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Cooks: Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry Shortcake is my husband’s favorite dessert. Lucky for me strawberries are in season and are on sale everywhere.

Strawberry shortcake is not only delicious but also one of the lighter and marginally healthier desserts that you can have. There are a few different ways that you can make strawberry shortcake. The easiest way, of course, is to get the premade cake cups, fill with fresh strawberries, and put whipped cream on top. However, I feel this is the least delicious way to go, that making your own cake ensures that your strawberry shortcake comes out as delicious as possible.

Here is a very simple and easy recipe for strawberry shortcake that will guarantee your family wants seconds on dessert!

  • 1 1/2 pounds strawberries, stemmed and quartered
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • Whipped Cream (recipe down below)

  • Mix your strawberries with 3 tablespoons sugar and refrigerate while juices develop, at least 30 minutes
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F
  • Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt in a medium-sized bowl
  • Add the heavy cream and mix until just combined
  • Place mixture in an ungreased 8-inch square pan and bake until golden, 18 to 20 minutes
  • Remove shortcake from pan and place on a rack to cool slightly. Cut into 6 pieces and split each piece in half horizontally
  • Spoon some of the strawberries with their juice onto each shortcake bottom. Top with a generous dollop of whipped cream and then place the shortcake on top
  • Spoon more strawberries over the top and serve

See, wasn’t that easy? If you want to relax now go ahead and use whipped cream from a can However, if you want to go the extra mile here is the recipe for home-made whipped cream:

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, chilled
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest

  • Using a mixer, beat the heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest until soft peaks form, about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

That’s it! Simple, right? Now that you have made your dessert and have some spare time you can go check out DealDash. They have everything that you need for your kitchen and more! I can tell you from personal experience, making home-made whipped cream is 100% easier with a KitchenAid stand mixer instead of my old-fashioned hand mixer.
