DealDash Sews: A Pillowcase Dress
Making a pillowcase dress is easy, simple, and fun. You can use it as a dress for a little girl, or a blouse for a lady.
I love to sew, and the pillowcase dress is one of the easiest projects that you can do. You can complete the pillowcase dress in less than an hour! It’s a low-cost, high reward project. My daughter has so many of these dresses. If you have a little girl or a granddaughter this project is perfect, you can even do it together.
Materials:
- Pillowcase
- Ribbon
Directions:
- Buy a pretty pillowcase or find one around your house.
- Figure out how much of the material you will need – I’ll attach a sizing guide for little girls at the bottom of these directions.
- Lay out your pillowcase, measure the length you need, and cut straight across the closed end, so you end up with a tube of fabric.
- Cut semi-circular openings out for the arms on the side of the tube that you just cut open. (see picture for guide:
- Using your zig-zag stitch on the sewing machine, stitch around the arm openings that you just cut so they don’t start to unravel in the wash. Alternately, if you have a serger you can use that to serge around the arm openings.
- Hem and sew a tube for the ribbon on the front and the back of the pillowcase dress. Please see the picture below for reference:
- Guide a long length of ribbon through both casings and tie. You can use a large safety pin to guide the ribbons through the tubes. You could also use a chopstick to push the ribbon through, instead.
Here is the sizing guide, if you would like to make it into more of a pillowcase tank top then use a shorter length, or if you would like a longer dress you can layer another piece of fabric underneath to make the dress longer. This is a great project because you don’t have to follow many measurements or instructions, make it your own!
