Exercise is important for everyone, no matter what your age or agility. Light exercise can even help ease arthritis pain.

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that typically affects older people. There are over 100 types of arthritis. Arthritis can affect one joint or multiple joints in your body. Scientists have found that light exercise can help ease arthritis symptoms and pain. When performed properly, light exercise can increase your range of motion, which will make your life more pleasant. Before starting any exercise plan be sure to consult your doctor.

Exercise at Home or the Gym

If your doctor suggests that you start your workout program off slowly, be sure to listen. You can start with a walk around the block a few times per day. This might sound like a very small start, but you can gradually work yourself up to longer and longer walks.

If you’d like to work out at the gym, perhaps swimming might be the right exercise for you. If you find swimming laps boring, then why not try an aqua aerobics class? The YMCA has them for all ages and skill levels.

If water aerobics isn’t your thing, there are also water walking classes, water Zumba, water yoga, aqua barre, and many others.

Physical Therapy

If your arthritis is extremely severe, you might want to consider working out with a physical therapist. Working out with a physical therapist is typically for a set number of visits, so be sure to take notes so you can replicate the exercises at home on your own.

Hopefully, your physical therapy appointments will be covered by insurance. This is another reason why you want to visit your doctor first so that they can write a prescription for physical therapy for you.

Gentle Stretches = Arthritis Relief

Before you attempt any exercise whatsoever be sure to do some gentle stretches. Doing your stretches before you exercise can help you avoid further injury and extra pain to your joints.

Start Slowly

Remember, it’s wise to start slowly with any new exercise plan. If you’re starting from zero, then it would be a good idea to begin with just a few times per week, and then work your way up to light exercise every day. Your health is important, be sure that you are also taking care of your body by drinking lots of water and getting a full 8 hours of sleep per night. This is the only body that you have, be sure to take care of it!
