Building a Bird Bath with DealDash
You might remember the DealDash article a few weeks ago showing you how to build a bird house. If you enjoyed that, perhaps it time to build a bird bath.
A well-constructed and thoughtfully executed bird bath can bring new species of birds to your yard for you to enjoy. The bird bath’s placement is very important so that the birds feel safe visiting the bath. Bird bath construction is very easy and can be completed quickly without extensive woodworking knowledge needed.
The first step in constructing your new bird bath is to decide where it will be placed in your yard. You want the bird bath to be easily visible to you when you are on your deck or inside your house. It’s also very important that the bird bath has some protection, either from a tree, bush, your deck, or even from the side of your house. If your bird bath is out in the open yard the birds won’t feel comfortable because it’s very likely that a hawk or other large predatory bird might swoop down and carry off your new birdie friends.
Next you will need to place a wooden post in the ground where you have decided to put your bird bath. A wooden post that is made for a mailbox is just perfect! If you have ever dug a hole and placed and sealed in a post for a mailbox it’s virtually the same thing. They sell “Quick Concrete” that’s in single-serve bags that meant to put in one mailbox post. It’s very simple to use, just pour the powdered concrete in, pour the correct measurement of water in, hold the post steady for 10 minutes, and bam! You’ve got yourself a post.
The next thing you’ll want to do is secure whatever vessel that you have chosen to be your bird bath. Many people like to go with a simple terra-cotta pot and saucer, or even just the saucer. You can put the pot facedown on the pole, secure with a putty or silicone, and place the saucer on top – this allows for easy cleaning. Simply take the saucer off and put it back on when you need to clean it.
That’s it! Simple, easy, and a lot of fun once your little birds start coming by daily. Be sure to change the water often, and the birds will be very happy.
