Cleaning Suede Boots & Shoes With DealDash
Winter weather, snow, and salt are very bad for your boots and shoes. Cleaning them regularly helps extend their life. Let DealDash show you how.
Living in the Northeast is very hard on my shoes! I try to clean off the salt, slush, and show residue a couple of times every winter, but it always comes back. Shoes and especially boots are very expensive, so I like to try and keep them as long as they still look nice. Here are some ideas and tips from DealDash to help you clean your shoes and boots to keep them looking nice for longer.
Cleaning Suede Boots and Shoes
- Using a suede brush (or other soft-bristled brush), lightly brush away dirt that has accumulated on your shoes. Brush repeatedly in the same direction, like you are brushing a cat or dog. Once you get off this surface layer of, your shoes should look a lot better already.
- Scuffs occur when the suede’s grain gets pressed down in one direction. Lift the grain and remove the look of the scuff by brushing scuffed areas vigorously back and forth with the brush, unlike the step above to remove the dirt.
- If you have any stubborn scuffs on your shoes, try a pencil eraser! Scuffs that won’t brush out can sometimes be removed by using a pencil eraser, believe it or not!
- To make life easier, be sure to spray a coat of suede protector on your boots or shoes. This will help prevent further stains and marks. It won’t completely eliminate them, of course, but it’s a step in the right direction. (Get it?! A step.)
Removing Watermarks
Removing watermarks from suede boots and shoes can be tricky. The same water that causes the stains can correct the situation as well. Here are the directions, but please be careful, you don’t want to ruin your shoes.
- Put a light coat of water onto your soft brush and rub the shoes gently until the surface is evenly wet without visible water stains.
- Using a soft cloth such as a washcloth or kitchen towel (not paper towel) blot up the excess water from the shoes.
- Stuff the boots with crumpled paper to help them keep their shape while they dry. I don’t advise using black and white newspaper as that can discolor the insides of your shoes, but the shiny paper that they print the coupons and ads on will do the trick.
- Put them in a dry spot and let the water evaporate for 24-48 hours with the paper inside.
