DealDash Cooks: Apple Crisp

Apples are America’s favorite fruit, and while they are awesome by themselves they are even better when baked into an apple crisp!

Did you know that 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the US alone? Even more amazing than that, 7,500 varieties of apples are grown around the world. That’s a big difference from the choice of Granny Smith’s, Red & Golden Delicious, and Gala apples that are available in your local supermarket. Apples are grown in all 50 states, however, so no matter where you are in the US you should always be able to buy apples. Other than just eating them apples have lots of different uses such as making baby food, juice, apple sauce, apple butter or jelly and vinegar.

In my opinion, though, none of those uses are quite as delicious as making your apples into an apple crisp! Making an apple crisp is simple and fairly quick, please read on below for the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 6 Gala apples (peeled, cored, and sliced up)
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon & 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (separated)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold butter

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Mix apples with white sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl to coat; out into a 9-inch square baking dish
  • Mix brown sugar, oats, flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in another bowl. Use a potato masher or 2 forks to mash cold butter into the oats mixture until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs; spread over the apples to the edges of the baking dish. Pat the top gently until evenly coated.
  • Bake in preheated oven until golden brown and sides are bubbling, about 40 minutes.

That’s it! Once that bad boy comes out of the oven serve it up warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Yum yum! Everyone I’ve ever served my apple crisp to has enjoyed it — or they are all really good at faking it!
