DealDash Cooks: Use Your Crockpot in Winter
One of my favorite parts of cooler weather is being able to use my crockpot. It makes dinner so easy! Follow these tips from DealDash and make great crockpot dinners.
Using a crockpot or slow cooker is an excellent way to prepare meals, especially in cold weather. By spending around 15-20 minutes in the morning, you can end up with a delicious homecooked meal at the end of the day. Read on for some tips on using your slow cooker, from DealDash.
Tough Meat? No Problem!
A wonderful benefit of using a crockpot to prepare your dinner is that you can prepare tougher meat in your crockpot. This is also a great money-saver because the tougher cuts of meat are often much less expensive than the tender ones. A good rule of thumb for using the crockpot is you should cook the food on either low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours. When you are preparing tougher cuts of meat, use the low setting for more tender meat.
Don’t Drown Your Dinner
A common misconception about the crockpot is that you need to use a lot of liquids. This actually isn’t true. The crockpot will gather all the moisture that it needs on its own with only a small amount of extra liquid being required – the extra liquid does not boil off like in a regular pot. If you food is coming out too liquidy, then take the top off in the final hour of cooking and most of the liquid will evaporate.
Pre-Cook Your veggies
If you are using root vegetables such as carrots or even potatoes, you will want to consider pre-cooking them. This can be as simple as cutting them up, putting them in a bowl with some water, and microwaving them for 5-6 minutes. Personally, when I have the time, I like to saute my veggies in a pan before I put them in the slow cooker. However, this obviously adds extra time and prep, so you might want to use the microwave instead.
