DealDash Helps: Clean Out Your Closet
Do you ever feel like the lady in the picture above? Your closet is packed to the gills, yet you feel like you have nothing to wear? It’s time to clean that closet out.
It might seem a bit counterintuitive, but when you clean out your closet and have less clothing to choose from it is often easier to find something to wear. The reason behind this phenomenon is when your closet is so tightly packed together it’s very easy to overlook clothing items, and in time you forget exactly what clothing that you have to choose from.
You should do a closet clean out twice per year – once when you put away your winter clothing for the year, and once when you put your summer clothing away for the year. The first year of bi-annual closet clean-outs will be the most difficult, it will only get easier the subsequent years. Let’s get down to the business of closet cleaning.
It’s just becoming summer now, let’s assume that you haven’t yet put away your winter clothing yet. The first thing that you are going to want to do is pull out all of your winter clothing. Shirts, sweaters, pants, wool socks, scarves, everything. Pile it all onto your bed or couch. The next thing you want to do is make piles. I personally make a keep, donate, and trash pile.
There are very few things that go into the trash pile, mostly worn out socks and tights, but if you are harder on your clothing than I am you might have pants with knee holes, or other imperfections.
The donation pile can include things that are worn out but still usable, items that don’t fit, or things that you bought or were given and just don’t like. If you are the type of person who claims individual charitable deductions on your taxes instead of taking the standard deduction you should make a list of the items that you are donating so that you can attach it to your donation receipt.
The keep pile should be neatly packed away, clean and ready for the next season. I like to toss in a few of the wooden cedar rounds that are meant to be put in dresser drawers to keep things fresh, but other people prefer to put in a fabric softener sheet or two.
Now, it’s time to put up your summer clothing. as you are putting your clothing on hangers be sure to hang the hangers backwards in your closet as you are hanging them up. After you have worn the item, washed it, and are putting it away again you can put the hanger as your normally would. This will make things easier when it’s time to clean out the closet again when the next season comes, because any clothing item that is still on a backwards hanger means that you haven’t worn it all season, and it’s time to donate it.
