Kids and their parents volunteering together is a rewarding family activity. Here are some tips from DealDash for volunteer projects to do with the whole family.

You as a parent, of course, want your child to grow up into a caring person that is empathetic to other people but where do you start? Here are some volunteer ideas for children and their families to do together.

Chemo Kits are Needed at Hospitals

Firstly, you can make chemotherapy care kits for children that are receiving chemotherapy treatments. There are many charity groups that can assist you in getting started. Also, it would be especially meaningful to do if you know someone personally that has gone through this type of treatment.

There are many things that you can put into a chemo kit, some examples are:

• Magazines
• Comfy socks
• Candy
• Fun water bottle
• Lotion (unscented)
• Earbuds
• Notebook and gel pens
• Crosswords or Sodoku books
• Headscarf

School and Playground Beautification

You can organize a trash pick up near your school to help make sure that your school looks the best that it can. Also, you can other things to beautify your school like painting rocks to go on the outside of the school or you could even see about sponsoring a buddy bench for your school for kids that might be lonely and need a friend. You can do these same beautifying activities at your favorite local playground as well.

Make Blankets

You could also plan a blanket making party with your kids. There are many simple patterns for making blankets and a number of charities like Project Linus that will happily accept. This could very well be something that your kids will continue to do as they get older as making blankets is not only a great thing to do for other people it is also a nice skill to learn for making things for themselves.

Foster Care Kits

Finally, you could also assist your kids in making bags for kids that are relocating to new foster homes. They can have basic necessities as well as something that will comfort them like a new stuffed animal. Here again is a project that your kids could carry on as they grow older. Personally, I like to make foster care kits for teens. Teens in foster care often get overlooked in favor of smaller kids who typically get donations from the Angel Tree. Some things that you could put into a teen foster care kit are:

• Deodorant
• Body spray
• Hairbrush/comb
• Hair ties
• Razor and travel shaving cream
• Notebook and gel pens
• Adult coloring book and colored pencils
• Inexpensive watch
• Funny t-shirt (I typically go with an adult unisex size medium. If it’s too big they can always use it as a pajama shirt.)
