DealDash Knows About Sunblock

DEALDASH sunblock

Now that Spring is here it’s time to step up your sunblock regimen. Here are some tips from DealDash.

It’s important to wear sunblock year round, but most people don’t take as much care in the winter. Now that Spring is here it’s very important to start wearing sunblock daily if you leave the house. The sun’s rays are brightest in the hours around Noon, but you should be applying sunblock before you leave in the morning, and re-applying every few hours if you are going to be outdoors.

What’s SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is very important to think about in the Spring and the Summer, especially. It’s a little tricky to figure out exactly what SPF you need, and how often to re-apply. Here is what the folks at Badger Balm have to say:

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor,is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer.

  • If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer). This is a rough estimate that depends on skin type, intensity of sunlight and amount of sunscreen used. SPF is actually a measure of protection from amount of UVB exposure and it is not meant to help you determine duration of exposure.
  • For best protection, experts recommend using a minimum SPF sunscreen of 15, applying the proper amount (2mg/cm2 of skin, or about one ounce for full body coverage), and reapplying every 2 hours.

As a very pale person, myself, I apply 30 SPF every day if I plan on leaving the house. If I plan on being outdoors for an extended period of time I apply 50 SPF.

What About Really Sunny Days?

On super sunny days when I know I’m going to be outdoors I always wear a hat! Not only that, I apply my cream sunblock in the morning and I bring along a spray on sunblock. This is especially important to remember if you have children. Little children have very sensitive skin and should be protected from the sun’s rays at all times. You wouldn’t want to damage their skin accidentally.

Does the Brand Matter?

Nope! The generic brand is just as effective as the more expensive name brand. Some of the name brands might have a few added benefits such as a nicer smell or be more moisturizing, but the sun protection is the same.
