DealDash Helps: Childhood Nighttime Fears

DealDash

Being afraid of the dark can be really scary for kids. Let DealDash give you some tips and suggestions to help.

Being afraid of the dark is a very common and normal fear for children to have. As a mom or dad, it’s important that you help them work through their fears and feel better about the situation. You have to show your child that they are safe in the dark. Try to help your children feel comfortable when they are alone at night in the dark. With your help sleeping in the dark will seem less scary. Here are some ideas from DealDash.

Reassure Them at Night

When your child calls to you at night be sure to go reassure them. Otherwise, they will just get more and more worked up. This is really a very important thing that you need to help your children with. It’s just a short part of your child’s life, though it might seem very long in those wee hours of the night. Ask them how you can help them, what they need for you to feel safe and secure.

Get a Nightlight

Some parents don’t want to give their child a nightlight because they don’t want them to become dependent on it. However, as I said above, this is really just a short phase in your child’s life. Soon enough they won’t want a “babyish” night light to keep them company at night. In my personal experience, my 5-year-old still sleeps with a nightlight but my 9-year-old doesn’t. Even if they need a nightlight for a longer period of time, it’s really not a big deal. If it makes them feel safe and secure, let them have it.

Be Confident and Loving

Try not to be upset when your child is afraid of the dark at night. Be sure to give them plenty of hugs and reassurance that they are safe. Tell them that they will always be safe at home, and that’s true whether it’s daytime or nighttime.

Create a Bedtime Routine

Everything is better when it’s more familiar. No matter what you’d like to be your routine, just stick with it. Many people go with a bath, a story, a song…Whatever makes them feeling safe and comfortable is best. Be sure that you stick with it, even on the weekends.

Many people let their kids stay up later on the weekends and get up later. As a result, their schedules get thrown off and chaos ensues. Kids love familiarity and structure – no matter how much they try to fight it. Remember, keep the kids to a schedule and everyone will be better off!
