DealDash Ideas to Keep Kids Occupied in Summer

Summer break is here!!! After the first few days, the kids will be bored. Here are some ideas from DealDash to keep them busy.

Summer is finally here, and most families are looking to sleep in. There is no more school, and everyone is in vacation mode. It may take some time for your child to transition from going to school every day to relaxing at home. Kids can easily get bored, especially during the summer. Here are some ways to keep your child from being bored during the summer, from DealDash.

Keep a Schedule

Having structure is important when it comes to kids. One of the best ways to keep them from being bored is to create a schedule. Creating individual binders for your kids is a great way to keep a schedule. You can fill their binders up with a list of chores, their daily activities, and time for learning. Keeping a schedule of activities will keep your kids occupied this summer.

If your kids are like mine, they go to camp for half-days. This means that they leave in the morning and come back at lunch. This leaves the rest of the day for activities. Here is where your binders will come in handy.

Get Some Fresh Air (and Camping Equipment from DealDash)

Staying inside during the summer is no fun. You can take your child to the park, for a hike, or even go to an amusement park. Another great idea is to set up a camp in the backyard. Get some tents and roast some marsh mellows and have a great time bonding with your kids.

Do Volunteer Work

Volunteering is a great way to keep your children from becoming bored. They can volunteer at a nursing home, the animal shelter, at your local food bank, or pick up trash in your neighborhood or on the beach. This will teach your child how to care for others and take their minds off of themselves. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for kids, even elementary school-aged ones. This is especially true if you are willing to volunteer alongside them.

5 End of Summer Ideas from DealDash

There is just a little bit of summer left before the kids go back to school, here are 5 things that you should do before summer is over.

It’s been a great summer, but all great things must come to an end…At least until next summer, anyway! Here are 5 things that you should definitely do before summer has officially come to an end.

  1. Go to the beach!! Have you been to the beach yet this year? If you haven’t, it’s definitely time to go. I personally haven’t been this summer, I stayed at home with my baby when the rest of the family went, so this is something that I am going to have to correct over the next few weekends. It’s getting slightly less hot here in New England, so I think it’s about time that the baby gets his first trip to the beach!
  2. Have a picnic. Picnics are always a great time. I personally like to go to a place called Salem Willows, they have a little boardwalk area, a lot of picnicking space, benches, trees, and even a view of the water. It’s a wonderful place to bring a picnic lunch, walk around, and then to go the boardwalk and get ice cream.
  3. Shop for summer clothing for next year. They are starting to put the fall and winter clothing out in the stores now, so it’s a great time to shop the clearance racks for summer clothing that you and your family can wear next year. I was just at Target tonight, and I was able to get many, many t-shirts, shorts, sandals, and dresses for my kids for insane deals, from $1-4 dollars! It was amazing. Now is the time to do your shopping, though, if you wait too much longer all of the best deals will be gone.
  4. Have your friends over for a BBQ. A BBQ is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to have a party with your friends. All you need is some frozen hamburger patties, hot dogs, buns, chips, and some beer & soda and you are all set! You can minimize the mess by using paper plates, plastic utensils, and solo cups. It’s not the most eco-friendly way to party, but all of those items are recyclable, anyway.
  5.  Have a backyard camp out with your kids.  I am personally not one to “rough it” in the outdoors too much, but camping in your backyard is a great compromise with your kids if they want to go camping. You can pitch your tent on your deck or in your backyard, get out the flashlights and tell spooky stories, enjoy the sights and sounds of the night, look at the stars…And still be able to go inside and use the bathroom, win-win!

I hope that this list has you thinking of some ways to stretch out the fun just a little bit more this summer. Now that you have a few ideas, you might need to buy some supplies. DealDash has Target gift cards, BBQ grills, and camping supplies. It’s always fun to play and win on DealDash, just click this link right here and you can get started. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!

DealDash Does Backyard Campouts

When I asked my daughter what she wanted to do this upcoming weekend her answer surprised me. She said she wanted to have a backyard campout.

My son used to request backyard campouts when he was younger, but my daughter was always too scared to participate. I guess this summer is going to be filled with fun nights of camping out in the backyard. It’s the perfect compromise of sleeping out under the stars, yet be close enough to a bathroom, kitchen, and a bed if it starts raining!

If you’ve never had a backyard campout it’s pretty simple to do. All you truly need is a tent, some sleeping bags or blankets that you don’t mind going outside, and some kind of lighting for the little ones. We do our backyard camping on our deck, so we cheat a little bit and just turn the deck light on. However, if you have older, braver kids then you might be able to get by with a camping lantern or even flashlights.

One of the best parts about backyard camping (other than the aforementioned bathrooms!) is playing games and telling stories. Here are a couple of fun games that you and your family can play while you are backyard camping.

  • Obstacle Course – You can easily turn your backyard items into a fun obstacle course for little kids, big kids, and even adults. You can let them jump over low hedges and bushes, do a tightrope walk on the garden hose, crawl under the deck chairs, do a lap around the whole house, and then back to the start. You can make this into a race, and even more fun than a single person race is if you team up a little kid with an older sibling or parent. It’s fun to see the older kids working with the younger ones.
  • Photo Bug Hunt – Photo bug hunt is exactly like it sounds! Make a list of easily found and identified bugs such as ladybug, ant, bee, spider, moth, etc. and send the kids or teams out with a camera or camera phone and see who is the first to bring back pictures of all the bugs on the list.
  • Bean Bag Ladder – Using a ladder from your shed or garage tape a paper declaring the number of points each step will receive. Make a line on your grass with tape, spray paint, or a garden hose. Have people stand behind the line and toss bean bags onto the ladder steps. If you have little kids playing this you might want to have a closer throwing line for them to make things more fair. If you don’t have any bean bags you can always fill up some ziplock bags with rice or beans, and if you double ziplock it they should still be intact enough to withstand the game so you can still use them to cook with after you are done with them.

Grab a ladder from the garage and play bean bag toss.

If backyard camping appeals to you then head on over to DealDash and pick up some camping supplies. DealDash has tents, sleeping bags, and plenty of other things that you can use for your backyard campout. Good luck and happy bidding everyone!
