DealDash’s Spring Cleaning Series: The Garage

DealDash

Spring is just around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning. Today, DealDash tackles the garage.

The groundhog didn’t see his shadow this year, so spring will be here before we know it. Over the next few weeks, we will bring you a Spring Cleaning series for around the house. Our first room is the garage! Read on for some garage cleaning tips from DealDash.

Step 1: De-Clutter

Before you can clean, you need to focus on de-cluttering. Start by focusing on the trash and empty boxes and such. Throw them away, or re-purpose your boxes to make storage space for everything else.

Step 2: Use a Pile System

As you clean, you can make three piles: keep, donate, trash. I find that making these three piles helps my process. Your donate/sell pile should be gently used so that someone can enjoy using it again. Making these piles also allows me to get the rest of my family involved. Someone else can bag the trash. You can ask for some help carrying things into the house.

Once you’ve gone through these piles, you’ll be amazed at how much space you actually have. This may be the time that you remember why you were so happy to have a garage in the first place. With any luck, you’ll also be a few dollars richer from something you found and were able to sell.

Step 3: The Actual Cleaning

Now that things are less cluttered, it’s time to start cleaning. My first two points of focus are on sweeping and cleaning the corners. When I say “sweeping”, I mean that I focus on the floors. You may need a leaf blower to help with that. Regardless, get rid of the junk, dirt, and possibly leaves from the floor. Next, focus on the corners. That’s where extra dirt seems to hide. It’s also where you’re most likely to find spider webs or cobwebs. Use your broom to knock them down.

Step 4: The Details

Now you can focus on the small things. Do your windows need cleaning? (Probably) Honestly, it’s worth considering if you want to fix or paint anything at this point too. I get it- no one wants to fix up the garage, but if you’ve got the clutter gone and things are tidy, it’s the perfect time to do a repair or small upgrade.

DealDash Kids: Encouraging a Love for Reading

DealDash

My kids love reading, and I hope yours do, too. If not, here are some helpful suggestions from DealDash to encourage their love for reading.

In today’s age, it’s easy for kids to be too involved with their TV and their video games. It’s important to try to build your child’s interest in reading. It can help with learning, problem-solving, and building imagination and creativity. Read these helpful suggestions from DealDash to get you started.

Read to Them Daily at a Young Age

First, the best way to instill reading in young children is to start reading them stories at a young age. While young children have a lot of energy, reading a story before bed is a perfect transition to get ready for sleep. When you prepare to read a story, let your children have some say. Ask them if they want a specific story or if they want “a surprise”. Calling the story that you pick a surprise will add to the allure. I don’t know about your kids, but mine typically go for the surprise!

Let Bigger Kids Choose the Books at the Store

Next, letting your children pick the stories that they read is important at all times. In other words, as your child gets older, let them choose books at the store. You’ll find that this can build their interest as they’ll develop a preference for a style or a character. Of course, they might enjoy a few suggestions from mom or dad. My daughter loves to hear about the books I read when I was her age.

Encourage Creativity

Also, something else that I’ve found to be key is encouraging your child. At some point, there will be some benefit to correcting as a child in is reading, but at the earliest stages, let them create their story. My nieces used to love telling a story based on the pictures that they saw over time, they would start to memorize the story that I was reading and then retell it from memory.

I love bringing art into the picture as a way to help encourage reading. I frequently draw a picture and ask my children to write a quick story, or have them do the same for me. It’s something that works for kids who are getting older but offers a connection. The key here is to be sure that what you’re doing doesn’t feel like work. If your child gets bogged down, you can have them tell you a story and then draw the picture and write it out.

DealDash Can Help Organize Kid’s Books

Finally, you can encourage your kids to expand their palette and read new things by keeping the books neat and organized. When you keep them in a pile or a stack on a random shelf they tend to pick whichever one is on the top. By organizing them nicely on their very own bookcase your kids will take pride in their book collection. To find kid’s bookshelves on DealDash, just click here. To see more choices, browse the Home, Garden, and Tools category on DealDash. Click here! Please remember, DealDash is only for adults. The DealDash services are offered and may only be used by persons over the age of 18.

Thanks for Reading

An important note is that a key part of reading that is often forgotten is having an imagination. Always encourage your child’s imagination. It’s like a muscle that needs exercise. Without imagination, a child can’t see the “picture” that comes from the words. Those pictures are what makes a story interesting. Thanks for reading the newest blog!

DealDash Helps: Organize Your Gift Wrapping

DealDash

Black Friday is almost here, and that means lots of wrapping! Wrapping gifts is fun, but it can be tricky to get organized. Don’t worry, DealDash can help.

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, but the process of getting ready for the holidays can be pretty chaotic. Things go more smoothly when organized. Below is a quick summary of an organized way to keep your gift wrapping simple. Read on for more information from DealDash.

Storage Solutions

Preparation is half the battle. I use old wrapping paper tubes to hold my unused wrapping paper together. Using it as a cuff keeps the current roll from unraveling. I like to keep all of the name tags that I have in a small plastic container. It also helps to keep the bows and ribbon neatly put away in the same area. Typically, I have one large plastic bin that all of these go into. If the wrapping paper won’t fit, it goes on top of the lid. There are custom wrapping paper bins for sale at many big box stores. Try snagging one after the holiday for a great deal.

Beautiful Storage Options on DealDash

However, you don’t have to settle for clear plastic storage bins when you have DealDash! You will find lots of options in the Home, Garden, and Tools category. There is an excellent product that is sometimes offered that has wall storage comprised of small baskets. This would be an excellent place to store your tape, scissors, and tags as well as ribbon. There are also storage cubes and shelves on DealDash. Just click here to check out the auctions.

The Wrapping Process

When I’m getting started, I like to clear the space I’ll be using. Typically, I try to use a kitchen table because of the size of the flat surface area. I stack my gifts based on who they’re going to and when I will need the gift. Family gifts go first, followed by friends, then co-workers, and finally any Christmas Party or White Elephant gifts that I’ll need.

I take one stack and put it to my left. I write out a name tag for my first gift.  And then I wrap the present, put the name tag on it, then set it off to my right. As I wrap more gifts, I stack them up until I complete the full stack. Once I finish the family stack, I set them back in their designated area and move on to the next stack.

By writing the name tag out first, I’m making sure I can’t forget who the gift belongs to. By keeping stacks separate, I’m able to be sure I know where the gifts are going and I’m able to check off who I’ve finished my gifts for to be sure I’m not missing anything.

Thanks for Reading

Personally, I love wrapping gifts. However, if you aren’t a fan, these tips should make your time easier with better organization. Thanks so much for reading this DealDash article on gift wrapping. I hope that it was helpful to you.

Tidy and Organize Your Garage With DealDash

DealDash

The winter is a fine time to organize the garage – it’s indoors yet it won’t be stiflingly hot during your experience. Here are some ideas from DealDash to help you tidy and organize your garage this winter.

Tidying and sorting your garage should only take a weekend as long as your garage is reasonably sorted to begin with. Remember, many hands make light work. Try to recruit your friends and family into helping you with this tidying and sorting project. Follow these tips from DealDash and your garage will be looking great in no time flat!

Sort your garage items

First of all, sort and categorize all the items in your garage. For this, you should empty your garage and start sorting everything into categories. Separate the tools from sporting equipment, electric tools, etc. You will realize just how much stuff you have and only then you will have the ability to determine the best ways to store and organize everything. Mislaid items in your garage should be returned to their proper place. You should sort the things that should be in the garage from the things that should actually be in the cellar, attic room or far better, sold at a yard sale. Remember to recycle everything that you decide to
get rid of.

Separate seasonal items and equipment

Next, you will want to separate seasonal items and sports equipment. Since it is currently winter, place snow related tools like snowthrowers, ice scrapers, snow shovels and also sleds, skis, and snowboards up front, easy to access, and organized together.

The items for warm seasons should be stored in a special cupboard or rack. Near the start of every season, you should plan the task of rotating the warm and cold in the cupboard. This is similar to swapping out your winter and summer clothing every season. For the other sports equipment, drawers and shelves should be created.

Create an Efficient Working Area

If you use your garage to do any handyman-type tasks or crafts, installing a table or a bench would be a good choice. A sturdy tool case and a pegboard are great for storing your gadgets and keeping them easily available. Keeping this area neat and tidy will go a long way towards loving your newly organized garage.

Additional Shelving and Cabinets

Also, now would be the time to employ someone to make cabinets or purchase some ready-made ones to put up yourself. Shelves and closets can be constructed right into your garage for a professional look. Invest in some excellent storage units as explained before and start organizing, storing and sorting. Cabinets and shelves should be mounted on the wall surfaces. The fundamental concept is to store the items that you use on a routine schedule in a way that makes them accessible each time you need to have them. Additional shelving can help.
