DealDash Helps: Volunteering Made Easy

DealDash

Have an urge to volunteer? Follow these easy tips from DealDash to get started.

Many people are interested in volunteering but aren’t exactly sure how to get started. Volunteering is a wonderful thing to do, it helps both your community and yourself at the same time. You always feel amazing after time spent helping others. Read on below for more information from DealDash.

Figure Out Where

Firstly, you’ll want to figure out where you want to volunteer. There are so many places right in your own community that would welcome your help. If you’re having trouble thinking of somewhere, here is a quick list of places you might want to consider:

  • An animal shelter
  • Your child’s school or PTA
  • A homeless shelter
  • A thrift/secondhand store (many benefit a cause, my local one donates to the animal shelter)
  • Your local park or nature preserve
  • A hospital

When Are You Available?

Next, you’ll want to figure out when you have time to volunteer. Can you only come sporadically or can you come weekly? Do you need a set or flexible schedule? Do you have the necessary criteria to volunteer? Some places, such as schools, will need you to have a CORI background check before you volunteer. Other places, such as the thrift store, do not have any such requirements.

After you have figured out when you have time to volunteer, see if the times you have available match up to the times at the place that you most want to volunteer. You might have to go through a few choices before you make a match.

For example, the place that I most wanted to volunteer was the NICU unit. They needed people to rock babies when the parents weren’t able to be there. Unfortunately, they required a commitment of 2 days per week for 6 months, which I just didn’t think that I could meet. Instead, I ended up volunteering at the library at my children’s school. The schedule is much more flexible and works with my lifestyle.

Sign Up, Show Up, and Feel Good

Finally, it’s time to make your choice and sign up as a volunteer. After you have made the big step in signing up, be sure that you show up at your assigned times. Trust me, after you have spent a session volunteering and helping others you will have a sunny new outlook on life. It feels good to help other people.
