DealDash Kids: Is it Time for a Phone?

DealDash

Chances are if your child is over the age of 10 they want a cellphone. Here are some tips from DealDash to navigate that conversation.

When you are a parent you have a lot of important choices to make for your children. One very important choice you need to make for your kids is whether or not they are ready for a cell phone. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are trying to make this important choice. Read on for more information from DealDash.

Do They Spend Time After School?

You need to keep into consideration whether or not your child spends a good deal of time without any parental supervision. Do they play after school sports? Are they walking home from school? Any time spent without you supervising them might point to them needing a cell phone of their own. They need to be able to contact you for things like a ride home or if they have some type of emergency.

Are They Mature Enough?

You will also need to consider the level of maturity of your child and if you can have a serious discussion with them about safety on the internet. You need to make sure that your child is mature enough to be able to take care of a cell phone and that they are able to keep themselves safe if they happen to be navigating the internet on their phone. Do they frequently lose things like mittens, hats, or homework? If so, they might not be quite mature enough to be carrying around an expensive electronic.

Does It Work With Your Budget?

Another important thing to consider when trying to decide if your child needs a cell phone is will it fit into your budget? Remember, it’s not just the outlay for the phone, it’s the bill every month. Cell phones are expensive so you need to decide if this is something that your budget can handle each and every month. You could have your child do chores around the house as a way to help pay for their cell phone. It would be a great way to teach them responsibility.

Thanks for Reading

A child having a cell phone is a big decision. However, if you take the time to figure out if they are truly ready for such as responsibility you will be able to make the most informed choice possible. If you find that they don’t really need it, perhaps you could compromise with something that allows them to use fun apps such as an iPad Mini or an iTouch.
