Exercise is so good for you, yet can be tiring and time-consuming. Here are some ideas from DealDash to help.

Every magazine, blogger, and celebrity advice guru goes on about the importance of exercise – understandably so, since staying active has so many benefits in terms of physical and mental health.  However, it can be hard to make time to go to the gym for a full workout. Also, life as a parent, grandparent, or even pet parent can be tiring enough that just the thought of working out is exhausting.  Here are some tips from DealDash for ways to stay active that won’t overwhelm you after a busy day and can be adapted to fit any schedule:

  • Use internet resources.  If you find you can’t squeeze in a trip to the gym, check out some instructional workout videos on Youtube.  There are lots of videos of various lengths and intensities, many of which do not require any equipment.  Make sure to search using keywords like “gentle,” “cardio,” “15 minute,” or whatever you prefer. If you’re into a more high-intensity workout, you can find that as well. 
  • Try some yoga.  It’s a great way to combine exercise with peace and solitude, so if you get a little time to yourself yoga can kill two birds with one stone.  And many yoga poses are harder work than they look – there may not be any running or heavy lifting but there’s a lot of muscle work and you can certainly work up a sweat!  Try a class or look online for some poses for beginners. If you can’t make time for a regular yoga session, try computer yoga!
  • Walk (or run!) the dog.  Family dog need a walk?  Knock two things off the to-do list at once and get sweating while you take the dog out.  To some extent this depends on the animal, but many dogs are happy to jog or run with you rather than walking; some even prefer it! If you don’t have a dog but would like a furry running companion why not get a side-gig as a dog walker and make a little extra cash?

Exercise as a Family

  • Get the kids involved.  Don’t have any time to yourself to work out?  Find an activity for the whole family that’ll serve as a form of exercise as well.  Maybe the kids want to play tag or kick a ball around or go to the pool, or maybe you can get everyone together for a family hike.  Exercising with your kids encourages healthy habits and can be fun for everyone.
  • Walk when you can.  It’s a simple thing, but walking short distances instead of driving can make a big difference, and you don’t even need to change your plans aside from leaving a few minutes earlier.  It’s environmentally friendly, as well!

No one is perfect, and you shouldn’t expect yourself to work out all the time. Luckily, any movement helps when it comes to staying fit and being a good example for your family.
