DealDash Goes to School
Depending on where you live, today is a popular day for the first day of school. Here are some helpful hints for you and your kids.
In my area, today is the first day of school. Some kids love school, but others are a little more reluctant. My son, who is in second grade this year, is definitely one of the reluctant ones. School has been very tough for him, he has some learning disabilities, and has had to repeat a grade already. Since things are so tough, I have been working on some strategies to make life a little easier on us. I’d like to share those strategies with you, in case you have a reluctant little one, as well.
- Repetition. With any task that you find unpleasant, repetition is the key to prepare yourself for the tasks ahead. My son wakes at the exact same time, eats the same breakfast, goes to the bus at the same time, etc. etc. etc. Every single day, Monday through Friday. There is no variation in the schedule, no surprises, so he knows exactly what to expect on a school day. This is an especially good tactic to follow with younger kids, or kids on the Autism Spectrum.
- Don’t procrastinate. When you procrastinate before doing an unpleasant task, like homework, it seems like the task just gets bigger and bigger the longer you wait. That’s why it’s important to do homework with the kids as soon as they get off the bus. There will be time for snacks, chores, and playtime later, but homework comes first.
- Keep organized. Try to find a dedicated space for your kids to store all of their school and homework supplies, backpacks, and other school items. It’s also helpful to make a dedicated space for them to put notes from the teacher, permission slips, and things that the parent needs to see/sign, daily. I personally got a decorative chalkboard that had clips on it, and the kids can clip any “must see” items to it when they come home from school.
