DealDash Helps Your Child With Fear of the Doctor

DealDash

If your kids are anything like mine they were afraid to go to the doctor. Read these tips and tricks from DealDash to help them get over that fear.

While you may think that going to see your healthcare provider is no big deal your child may have other ideas in mind. If your child is afraid of going to the doctor there are several ways in which you can assist in easing this fear. Remember, kids (especially younger ones) don’t understand that they will feel better after a trip to the doctor. Read this article from DealDash, and learn some handy tricks to get your child more comfortable with visiting the doctor.

Think Positively, Be Upbeat

You need to focus on the positives of going to the doctor. You need to tell your child that doctors are there to help and focus on the fun that can be had. For example, many doctors give out stickers to young patients.  This is a great way to ease their fear over a doctor’s visit. My kids have gotten lots of small prizes from going to the doctor such as coloring books, bouncy balls, and once the dentist gave my daughter a tiny teddy bear.

Please Be Honest

Being honest with your child is another thing that you need to do. You do not want to tell them, for example, that they will not feel pain at the doctor’s office as in reality things like shots can hurt. You need to be upfront and honest about what is going to go on during their visit so that there will be no unwanted surprises.

Offer a Small Bribe

I know that this isn’t the healthiest suggestion, but I always promise my kids a fast food kid’s meal if they don’t cry when they get their shots. This is a big treat since we don’t eat fast food too often, so it usually works. My 6-year-old daughter hasn’t cried for shots since she was three – even when she had an allergic reaction and needed an epi-pen at school. If your kids aren’t big fans of fast food, then try to think of some other “extra special” treat for them that they might not get very often such as ice cream.

Bring a Friend

Don’t have your child go alone. Of course, you will be there with them, but what about taking a special stuffed animal with them as well? It could go really far in easing the fear of a visit to the emergency clinic. Also visits to the dentist or your family’s doctor. It’s very simple to pack along a small stuffed animal and you will be so surprised at how well it can work. After all, stuffed animals were made for hugging!

Choose the Right Doctor

If you are seeking a doctor for your child always be sure to find one that specializes in family medicine. It helps to know that they have a great bedside manner with kids. Getting recommendations as to which doctor to pick for your child is highly suggested. You can ask friends, neighbors, and relatives. You can also ask for suggestions from your child’s school, as well.
