DealDash Kids: Reading at Home

DealDash

Kids will be returning to school in a few weeks, either in-person or online. Let’s get back into the swing of education by reading more at home. DealDash has some suggestions for you.

With many places announcing their learning plans for the upcoming school year, it means that school is on the horizon. If your kids haven’t been doing much (or any!) reading over the summer, now is a great time to start. Also, it will get them back into the “learning frame of mind”. Here are some tips to get them started, from DealDash.

Let Them Choose

To begin with, who wants to read things that they aren’t interested in? Many libraries are now opening back up or offering curbside pick-up. For younger kids, you can ask them what they would like to read about. As for the older ones, pull up the library website and let them choose for themselves. When kids get to choose exactly what they want to read they are much more likely to enjoy the experience and want to try another book when they are finished.

Have Family Reading Time

Next, try to have a family reading time each day. This can be sometime during the day, or right before bed. You can either choose a book and read aloud to the family, or each person can read their own book to themselves. It just depends on the age of the family members.

If All Else Fails…

Finally, some people just don’t enjoy reading. If your child just isn’t interested but you still want them to practice, you might have to bribe them. You can tell them that for every 15 minutes of reading that they finish they can have 30 minutes of screen time, or perhaps go to bed 15 minutes later. It’s up to you what the bribe should consist of, but it should be something small that you don’t mind happening each day. For example, you might not want to use candy as a bribe if you don’t want them to eat candy every day.

DealDash Helps Organize the Books

Do you have a bookshelf that is dedicated to your children’s books? Having all of their books in one easy place to choose from will make them more willing to pick a book. If they have to dig through a shelf of adult’s books or search all over the house for a book can make them feel like it’s more of a chore. So if you don’t have a bookshelf for your kids, it’s time to get one from DealDash. You can find bookshelves and other cabinets and shelving items in the Home, Garden, and Tools category.
