The majority of people who have pets stick with the more common species such as a cat, dog, or even a lizard.

However, there are some people out there that like exotic pets. The sugar glider is a great example of a cute, cuddly, and fun exotic pet. If you live in Alaska or California, don’t get too excited about having a sugar glider, unfortunately Sugar gliders are illegal in both of those states. If you live in Pennsylvania or Massachusetts, you would need a special permit to own a sugar glider, so perhaps they aren’t ideal for you, either. Regulations can vary by state and laws can change, so check with your state Fish, Game and Wildlife Department before you make plans to get a sugar glider.

As you might guess, a sugar glider is partial to anything sweet, especially fresh fruit & vegetables. If you decide to keep one as a pet you will need to give it fresh fruits and vegetables every day, otherwise it will not be a very healthy little animal.

As for the gliding, the sugar glider can’t actually fly, but they do have a membrane that stretches from their wrist to their ankles, allowing them to glide from tree to tree in the wild.

An interesting item to note: though they look like a squirrel, they are actually a marsupial, like a kangaroo or a koala bear, so they keep their babies in a pouch until the babies are ready to be slightly more independent, though in the wild they usually do live in a family group. Sugar gliders have a lifespan of about 10 years, and stay very small, approximately 6 inches and 6 ounces.

These adorable little creatures are extremely smart, and even though they might seem like a hamster or gerbil at first glance they are actually as smart as a dog or cat. They are able to learn their name, come when called, and do a few different tricks.

Not only are they cute and smart, but they are cuddly and loving as well. Once they have bonded to their “family”, which includes your family and your pets, they don’t want to be without you, and would be very happy to spend every waking moment with you, your kids, or your cat or dog.

Sugar gliders require a cage, toys, food, and love. They don’t need any vaccinations, flea treatments, or other vet care, unless they get sick. Sugar gliders make adorably awesome pets, if you’re looking for a tiny pet with a big personality give the sugar glider a try, you will be pleased.
