DealDash Spring Cleaning: The Office

DealDash

If you have been working from home these past few weeks you have been spending a lot of time in your home office. Here are a few quick ways to clean and freshen it, from DealDash.

If you’ve been following our series, you know that we’ve got a focus on Spring Cleaning. We thought that it may be a good idea to focus on your home office given that so many people are working from home right now. Whether your office is something you’re using for work, school, or just the area that you typically keep your computer, there are a few universal ideas we’d like to offer.

First – Top of the Desk

Start with the top of your desk. If you’re anything like me, your desk ends up being a “catch-all”  where you just throw stuff. Start by cleaning the top of your desk off, dusting, and putting things into stacks. You can organize the stacks such as a pile for mail, a pile of things that need to go back into their respective places in the house, and a pile of things for the trash.

Second – Paperwork

Next, find the paperwork that needs organizing. We always seem to develop a log jam of paperwork. So, pull out the stuff that isn’t organized, and divide into stacks. Rather than the typical “keep, donate, trash” you should consider dividing based on either month or “subject”. By subject, we mean that you should put your bills together, your reports together, your work stuff should go in one pile, and school stuff should go in another. Either option works, but it’s important to have a consistent technique.

Third – General De-Cluttering

After finishing with the paperwork, focus on a general de-cluttering. Get rid of old paperwork in general (the IRS recommends keeping records for 7 years). Get rid of that dead plant, condense all those paper clips into one spot. Make sure your bookshelf is organized in whatever order you like. I”m a big fan of having different sizes and shapes so that it adds a bit more “texture” when you look at it. You may prefer to organize by subject, author, or genre.

Final Step – Computer Files

Finally, consider organizing your computer. Odds are, you’ve accumulated some files over the years. Run a de-frag and look for the files that you don’t use any more. Consider deleting old programs that are out of date and look at your download folder. Do you really need that popular meme from 2014 any more?
