DealDash’s Spring Cleaning Series: The Garage
Spring is just around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning. Today, DealDash tackles the garage.
The groundhog didn’t see his shadow this year, so spring will be here before we know it. Over the next few weeks, we will bring you a Spring Cleaning series for around the house. Our first room is the garage! Read on for some garage cleaning tips from DealDash.
Step 1: De-Clutter
Before you can clean, you need to focus on de-cluttering. Start by focusing on the trash and empty boxes and such. Throw them away, or re-purpose your boxes to make storage space for everything else.
Step 2: Use a Pile System
As you clean, you can make three piles: keep, donate, trash. I find that making these three piles helps my process. Your donate/sell pile should be gently used so that someone can enjoy using it again. Making these piles also allows me to get the rest of my family involved. Someone else can bag the trash. You can ask for some help carrying things into the house.
Once you’ve gone through these piles, you’ll be amazed at how much space you actually have. This may be the time that you remember why you were so happy to have a garage in the first place. With any luck, you’ll also be a few dollars richer from something you found and were able to sell.
Step 3: The Actual Cleaning
Now that things are less cluttered, it’s time to start cleaning. My first two points of focus are on sweeping and cleaning the corners. When I say “sweeping”, I mean that I focus on the floors. You may need a leaf blower to help with that. Regardless, get rid of the junk, dirt, and possibly leaves from the floor. Next, focus on the corners. That’s where extra dirt seems to hide. It’s also where you’re most likely to find spider webs or cobwebs. Use your broom to knock them down.
Step 4: The Details
Now you can focus on the small things. Do your windows need cleaning? (Probably) Honestly, it’s worth considering if you want to fix or paint anything at this point too. I get it- no one wants to fix up the garage, but if you’ve got the clutter gone and things are tidy, it’s the perfect time to do a repair or small upgrade.
