DealDash Holidays: Host a Family Sleepover
Getting to know the smaller members of your extended family is important! Hosting a niece and nephew sleepover is a fun way to accomplish this. Here are some tips from DealDash to get you started.
One of my favorite holiday traditions is to have a sleepover with all of the children in our family. Fortunately, our house is large enough that we can bring all of the little cousins (my 3 children, nieces, and nephews) together for a little holiday fun. It can be difficult to come up with new ideas though. Below is a list of some of our favorites, from DealDash.
Christmas and Seasonal Crafts
We’ve made it a family tradition to start with some sort of Christmas and/or seasonal crafts. The specific project may change every year, but our family loves seeing the decorations or the Christmas cards that are hand made from each of our children. Some years, our Christmas project includes baking cookies. And as my husband likes to say, “Why choose?”.
Holiday Movies are a Hit
Christmas videos are also popular in our family. Some families rotate movies to ensure that things don’t get “stale”. My spouse’s family has one movie that has become a Christmas tradition. There’s nothing wrong with either option. Personally, my favorite Christmas movie is Elf, and my kids prefer Home Alone. Whatever your favorite seasonal movie is, it’s always better with popcorn! Just make sure that you check with all of the parents first – some kids are not advised to eat popcorn if they have braces.
White Elephant/Secret Santa
If you’ve never heard of it, look up the idea of a “white elephant” gift exchange. We’ve tried having families go out and let the kids pick gifts. We’ve also had years where I purchase a group of gifts and let the kids select from them. It’s an interesting idea and can be even more comical with kids. Traditionally the white elephant exchange is just silly presents. If you think that the kids would prefer more useful things you can always ask the parents to bring a fun gift that is worth around $5 to $10.

Thanks for Reading
My husband and I both have fond memories of cousin sleepovers as kids, and we are hoping to extend the tradition to our kids and their cousins. It can be a bit of work to keep everyone entertained, but the more you plan ahead, the better time everyone will have. Thanks so much for reading this DealDash article on hosting a family sleepover.
