DealDash Spring Cleaning Series: The Attic Room

DealDash

Welcome back to the next room in DealDash’s Spring Cleaning Series: The Attic. Read this article, then get cleaning!

The next in our Spring Cleaning series is the attic. This room probably doesn’t get a lot of use, but it should be cleaned at least once per year. Spring is the perfect time to make that happen. For the purposes of this article, we’re focused on an attic that is another room. Most of what we say won’t apply to an attic that is full of insulation and, essentially, used as storage. Read on for some great suggestions, from DealDash.

De-Clutter and Re-Organize

Start with a focus on de-cluttering and planning on where that stuff is going to go. When you first moved into your house, everything in this attic had its place. Try to restore some of that organization. I find that having boxes with descriptive labels has been incredibly helpful.

Give Your Items New Life – Donate!

Some of those things don’t need a place of their own anymore; at least not at your house. Can you make any donations? Is there something that you haven’t used in years? Maybe you thought you could fix that lamp and it just hasn’t happened yet. Don’t be afraid to sell, donate, or throw out the things that are filling your basement.

Let’s Clean Up

Next, it’s time to focus on cleaning your space. Start with the windows, they are often forgotten in an attic. Look to the corners for bugs, spider webs, and cobwebs. They’re a sign that your space may be under-used and they just look bad. Get those webs out of the corner and then focus on the floor. When is the last time that you did a thorough sweep/mop of vacuuming of those floors? This is the perfect chance. If you have carpet, nothing is quite as refreshing as vacuuming a room; especially in the spring. It’s like the vacuum sucks away the stale air from the winter and breathes new life into your room. Throw open those clean windows and get a little fresh air into your attic room.

Polish Up Wooden Surfaces

Finally, consider the wood on your furniture. It’s something most people forget, but if you get a wood cleaner that also offers some sort of polish or shine to it, you’ll be amazed at how much brighter the room looks. It’s a 5-minute project that will top off the chore. I promise it’s worth the effort. Consider polishing up any small tables, chairs with wooden arms/legs, and any wooden knickknacks you have lying around. As an added bonus, most wood polish has a delightfully fresh and lemony scent.
