DealDash Fosters Good Eating Habits
Being a parent means that you sometimes have to make difficult choices for your kids, even if they don’t agree with you.
If you’re a busy parent like myself, sometimes it’s easy to let healthy eating habits fall by the wayside when things get busy at home. Grabbing pizza or a burger on the way home is quicker and easier than making a home-cooked meal after a long day of school, work, sports, and other after-school activities – not to mention homework! While grabbing a quick meal out occasionally won’t hurt anyone, it’s a good idea not to get in the habit.
If your kids are old enough to have homework, sports, and after-school activities they are old enough to help you prep and cook simple (and even complex!) meals at home. As the old idiom says, “many hands make light work”. As long as you have adequate counter space there’s not a reason in the world why your kids ages 5+ can’t help you prepare dinner.
The way to lead kids down a road of healthy eating habits is modelling – by you and the other trusted adults that they know. The more adults that they love and trust that they see eating healthy fruits and veggies, lean meats, and whole grains eating, the more they will want to emulate them. In turn, emulation will become habit, and you will have given your kids the gift of healthy eating habits. That’s a gift that can last a lifetime.
In addition to your kids helping prepare dinner, they can also help you make the week’s meal plan. For younger kids, give a few healthy choices and let them pick. For older kids you can see what they come up with on their own, and be there to guide them if they go astray into the land of junk food.
